WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE AND WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?

The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely (greater than 95 percent probability) to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia (NASA, 2019).

  • Global warming refers to the long-term warming of the planet since the early 20th century, and most notably since the late 1970s, due to the increase in fossil fuel emissions since the Industrial Revolution. Worldwide since 1880, the average surface temperature has gone up by about 1 °C (about 2 °F), relative to the mid-20th-century baseline (of 1951-1980). This is on top of about an additional 0.15 °C of warming from between 1750 and 1880.

  • Climate change refers to a broad range of global phenomena created predominantly by burning fossil fuels, which add heat-trapping gases to Earth’s atmosphere. These phenomena include the increased temperature trends described by global warming, but also encompass changes such as sea level rise; ice mass loss in Greenland, Antarctica, the Arctic and mountain glaciers worldwide; shifts in flower/plant blooming; and extreme weather events.

How our food affects climate change.

  • The environmental impact of the lifecycle and supply chain of animals raised for food has been vastly underestimated, and in fact accounts for at least half of all human-caused greenhouse gases (GHGs), according to Robert Goodland and Jeff Anhang, co-authors of "Livestock and Climate Change".

  • Freshwater makes up a very small fraction of all water on the planet. While nearly 70 percent of the world is covered by water, only 2.5 percent of it is fresh. The rest is saline and ocean-based. Even then, just 1 percent of our freshwater is easily accessible, with much of it trapped in glaciers and snowfields. In essence, only 0.007 percent of the planet's water is available to fuel and feed its 6.8 billion people (National Geographic, 2019).

  • We can't ignore the potential for "surprises" down the line. There are many uncertainties in such predictions. The world has not seen such changes in climate for millennia, and so it is impossible to know how our agricultural systems will react in the real world. For example, the complex interlinkages with the impacts of climate change on pests, diseases and pollinators, like bees, are largely unknown. Also, climate models have difficulty in accurately predicting the detailed local environmental changes that are important for food production, particularly weather extremes (Clark, 2012).

How our purchases affect Climate Change.

  • The constantly changing in technology has caused that E-waste has been increasing majorly. People often replace electronic equipment, because they want an upgraded model or buying a replacement is actually cheaper than repairing an object. Officials are hoping that more people are more willing to dispose their electronic waste, instead of throwing them on a landfill. Most of the e- waste end up as waste on landfills. If changes won’t come soon, these 45 million tons of E-waste will increase to 52,2 million tons by 2021.

  • Clothes are one of the cause of the climate change, because clothes are often made of plastic fibers. Fabrics, such as Polyester, Nylon, Acrylic and other synthetic fabrics, are very often used to make clothes and make up about 60% of all the clothes around the world. Scientist Imogen Napper says in a study of 2016 about plastic fibers, that only by walking around with clothes on causes plastic fibers to fall off. Fibers of clothes are causing microplastic pollutions.

  • Some services overpackaged their products to their customers. For example, takeaways restaurents give plastic cutlery and a plastic bag with your order. These things are mostly unnecessary and most of  the time, people will throw things away what they don’t use (Vox, 2018).This is harmful for the environment.

Consumer Products

  • The packaging of products are the first things what consumers see and these things can have an impact on the consumer buying behavior. The  packaging of chips, pizza and toothpaste are mostly not recyclable. For example, a chip bag is made of seven layers of foil and plastic and that is not recyclable, because there is no machinery at the moment that can separate these several layers. As a result, there is more unnecessary waste on earth than what we need. According to Lawrence Black, director of global business development at waste management, an environment solution provider. It is very difficult to solve this problem, because it cost too much to fix it and if there is not an ongoing market for material it will not be recycled.

How fossil fuel is the main cause of Climate Change.

Greenhouse gases are vital to life on Earth, but the growing concentration of certain gases, such as carbon dioxide, is throwing the planet's delicate balance out of whack.

  • Before the late 1600s, there were no real factories. Things were made by hand without the help of machines. That all changed with the invention of the steam engine.

  • The steam engine made big factories possible. Then it was put into trains and ships, so it could help transport things. It even powered some early cars. The demand for coal skyrocketed. This big change was called the Industrial Revolution.

  • Petroleum is a liquid that comes from oil. We put it into our cars to make them run. Petroleum means “rock oil.” It comes from the remains of once-living organisms, just like coal. People can also refer to petroleum as crude oil and sometimes just oil.

  • Petroleum wasn’t used very much until another invention came along—the internal combustion engine.

Oil

  • Natural gas is often used for cooking and heating homes. It is one of the most important sources of energy in the world.

  • Natural gas is cleaner burning than either coal or oil. That means it causes less pollution. Many places have switched from burning coal to burning natural gas.

FUN FACTS

Funny Quotes and Misconceptions About Climate Change

There are a lot of information in the internet these days. Let us learn to filter the right from wrong because with truthfulness comes faith; with faith we can work together for change.

WEATHER VS CLIMATE

"Climate is what we expect; weather is what we get." - Mark Twain

When you think of Weather you think of rain, snow, clouds, winds, floods or thunderstorms.
When you think of Climate you think of temperature, humidity and rainfall patterns.
